Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer">
Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

Western Australian economy at crisis point say builders">
Western Australian economy at crisis point say builders

Saturday, June 7, 2008

Western Australian Master Builders Association (MBA) yesterday demanded the Carpenter Government call an emergency cabinet meeting to avoid a “state of emergency” over the energy crisis gripping WA. A MBA spokesperson said that hundreds of workers have already been stood down, many without pay, and that the cost of building material is soaring.

The Minister for Energy, Fran Logan has admitted that the gas shortage caused by Tuesday’s fire is damaging the economy as mining, manufacturing and construction industries wind back operations. Western Australia’s two major brick producing companies have shut operations and Wesbeam’s $A100 million Neerabup pine production facility has been closed, their 130 employees have been stood down.

Wesbeam chief executive James Malone said, “It’s an industrial tsunami in my view. It’s a little ripple that has very quickly had a huge multiplying effect on the whole community”.

Michael McLean, Master Building Association director said “It’s a worst-nightmare scenario, and not one we could have imagined in our wildest dreams,” building supplies are expected to start running out by the middle of next week.

Premier Carpenter has announced a meeting of ministers and industry representatives to take place on Sunday to discuss solutions to the growing crisis. Tim Wall, managing director of Apache Corporation has said Apache is conducting a worldwide search for the parts need to repair the pipeline.

Major mining companies and Apache partners BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto have already reported they are suffering with the loss of gas supply; the Chamber of Minerals and Energy has talked down the effect saying that they don’t expect the crisis to take the heat off the booming mining industry.

Opposition leader Troy Buswell has describe the performance of Fran Logan as “absolutely dismal” noting that Mr Logan had experienced a similar incident in January this year, when a fire at Woodsides Karratha operations had a similar effect.

Football: Atlético Madrid beats Marseille 3-0 to win third Europa League title">
Football: Atlético Madrid beats Marseille 3-0 to win third Europa League title

Saturday, May 19, 2018

On Wednesday, Spanish capital football club Atlético Madrid defeated French team Olympique de Marseille 3–0 to win the UEFA Europa League Final at the Stade de Lyon, in France. French striker Antoine Griezmann scored a brace (two goals in one game), one goal in each half, and Atlético’s captain Gabi netted the third goal a few minutes before the final whistle as Atlético won the UEFA Europa League for the third time. This was Marseille’s third defeat in three Europa League or UEFA Cup finals, never netting a single goal in the final.

Marseille had greater ball possession and better passing accuracy. Marseille were awarded three free-kicks in the first ten minutes of the match. The French side created several chances in the first half but failed to convert any into a goal. Around the 20th minute, Marseille’s André Zambo Anguissa lost the ball, as Madrid’s captain Gabi assisted Griezmann who opened the scoring with his left foot. A couple of minutes later, a referee made the first booking of the match. Atlético’s Šime Vrsaljko received a yellow card for a bad foul. Just after the half-hour mark, Marseille’s midfielder Dimitri Payet was injured and replaced by Maxime Lopez. Payet has provided 22 assists in all competitions this season. The first half ended in a 1–0 lead for the Spanish side. Marseille’s Jordan Amavi was the second player to receive a yellow card.

At the beginning of the second half, Vrsaljko was replaced by Juanfran due to injury. Less than five minutes into the second half, Frenchman Griezman doubled the lead, scoring another left-footed goal, assisted by Koke. Koke also assisted Gabi in the 89th minute, who scored his first goal for Atlético since August 2015. 34-year-old Gabi became the oldest player to score a goal in a Europa final. Fernando Torres was substituted for Griezmann in the 90th minute. Marseille committed eighteen fouls in the match, twice as many as their opponents. Madrid’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak acheived his seventh clean sheet in this season’s European competitions — UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

Griezmann was awarded the Man of the Match award. After winning the match, Griezmann said, “I’ve been working to experience such a moment for many years”. Marseille’s defender Adil Rami said, “The final step was too far for us but we fought for everything. We lacked experience. Against a team like this you shouldn’t try to play football. You need to knock it long and high and win second balls. When you try to play and lose the ball against them, that’s when you’re in trouble. The opening goal we conceded was the turning point. Up until then we had troubled their defence.”

Previously, Atlético won the Europa League in 2010 and 2012. This was the second Europa league victory for the Rojiblancos under Diego Simeone’s management. Atlético has also reached two UEFA Champions League finals under Simeone’s management — in 2014 and 2016 — losing both to their city rivals Real Madrid.

Swedish nuclear reactors shut down over safety concerns">
Swedish nuclear reactors shut down over safety concerns

Saturday, August 5, 2006

Correction — August 14, 2006 This article reports that the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant reactor cooling systems failed. This is incorrect. Two of the four emergency diesel generators supplying power to the plant failed to start as expected, during a reactor shut down. The emergency cooling system, which functioned normally was sufficient to meet the reactor’s needs. Wikinews apologises for the error

Three of Sweden’s ten nuclear reactors have been shut down due to safety concerns following an incident last week at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant, in which the reactor cooling systems failed. The reactor has since been shut down there. After the incident, the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate, SKI asked all the nuclear power plants to demonstrate that the same failure could not happen in them. On Wednesday, two more reactors at Oskarshamn were shut down after the operator said their safety could not be guaranteed.

Last week’s incident at the Forsmark plant was triggered by a short circuit that cut power to the reactor cooling system. Two of the four backup generators also failed to start, but the remaining two worked and were sufficient to meet the plant’s needs. Greenpeace reports that the fault in the backup power systems were traced to new equipment installed in 1993.

The spokesman of the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate Anders Bredfell denied that there was any danger of a meltdown, adding that there was also a backup gas turbine to power the cooling system in an emergency.

However, Lars-Olov Höglund, who was responsible for the nuclear plant Forsmark for many years, said the incident was the most dangerous one since Chernobyl and Three Mile island, and that a meltdown was avoided only by pure luck. His views have however been questioned as he is involved in litigation with the Swedish nuclear industry and is known as an outspoken nuclear critic. Researchers at the Royal Institute of Technology as well as the personnel at the power plant were critical of Höglunds’ view.

Speaking to BBC News, SKI spokesman Anders Bredfell said that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was informed of the incident as required and that the incident classes as a ‘2’ in the 0-7 scale used by the IAEA to assess the severity of the incident.

Another reactor in Forsmark and a fifth at Ringhals nuclear power plant have been offline due to planned maintenance work. With five of its ten reactors down, Sweden’s power generation capacity is down by almost a fifth.

The environmental group Greenpeace called on the government to shut down all reactors and probe whether the fault was a generic one. The Green Party has called for an independent investigation of the incident. Sweden is scheduled to retire all its nuclear power plants in the next few decades, as decided by a referendum in 1980.

First plane arrival for more than 10 years to renewed airport in Grozny, Russia">
First plane arrival for more than 10 years to renewed airport in Grozny, Russia

Thursday, October 5, 2006

Grozny, a city of the Chechen Republic, Russia, celebrated the arrival and the later departure of the first passenger aircraft, a Tu-134A-5, for more than 10 years. The renovated Severny (Northern) Airport opened prior to the 30th birthday of the Republican Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov, son of the former PM Akhmad Kadyrov who was killed by terrorists, though no official relation of these events has been confirmed.

The formal opening of Grozny airport occurred under tightened security precautions since the Chechen rebel threat still exists in the region. The airport was used as the base of the 46th Brigade of the Russian Interior troops.

The main building of the airport was heavily damaged by the years of Chechen Wars. Now it has been reconstructed in compliance with international standards.

Visa seeks to issue largest IPO in US history">
Visa seeks to issue largest IPO in US history

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Visa, Inc. announced on February 25, 2008 that it would soon go ahead with a much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO) of about half its shares. This would make it the single biggest IPO in United States history, according to the regulatory filing the company made. Visa hopes to raise about US$17-19 billion, emulating its main rival, MasterCard Inc., which successfully put out an IPO in 2006.

Shares are expected to range from $37 to $42 each. Visa is banking on a changing global economy which relies less on liquid cash and more on credit. Revenue at both Visa and MasterCard has climbed as consumers pay for more purchases with credit and debit cards, instead of cash. Cards are expected to be used for 55 percent of all U.S. consumer transactions by 2011, up from 40 percent in 2005.

Analysts have suggested that current economic conditions, the sub-prime mortgage crisis and the weakening dollar, may leave investors skeptical about Visa’s potential earnings. However, as both Visa and MasterCard charge fees for transactions made with their cards and do not actually give credit, they avoid the current credit crunch and possible defaulted loans. Nonetheless, a slowdown in consumer spending would hurt the revenue stream of both Visa and MasterCard.

The two other main competitors, American Express and Discover, operate their own credit-lending networks and could therefore be vulnerable to credit risks.

Cloud Computing Revolutionises Contact Centre Outsourcing And Telecommunications

Cloud-computing revolutionises contact centre outsourcing and telecommunications

by

Effie

KUALA LUMPUR: SUPERCEED (M) Sdn Bhd, (Superceed) a company jointly funded by the Malaysian government via the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation, Kumpulan Modal Perdana and Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd yesterday launched a novel information technology-based service concept C the Unified Virtual Contact Centre, at the Gardens Hotel and Residences.

The event was officiated by Deputy Minister of Finance I, Senator Datuk Donald Lim.

Technology is revolutionising contact centre solutions, said Jeffrey Tan, chief executive officer (CEO) of Superceed.

The virtual contact centre model eliminates the need for premise-based contact centre hardware and software, replacing them with on demand internet-based contact centre facilities, he said.

YouTube Preview Image

This means that companies no longer have to be saddled with high set-up and maintenance costs should they require contact centre services. They can simply sign up for online facilities and pay as they go.

According to Tan, companies pay monthly subscription fees for the required number of agents or the capacity the business needs and have the flexibility to increase or decrease capacity of interaction volume, which is cost effective for businesses.

This concept of elasticity is attractive for multinational corporations and small to medium enterprises alike, he said.

He added, We can deduce the cost savings of VCC easily. The CAPEX for VCC is virtually zero. The typical CAPEX for premise-based contact center hardware and software of RM15,000 per agent. The OPEX for VCC over a 12-month campaign is about 25 per cent of CAPEX for premise-based contact center solutions (based on VCC entry level pricing). Considering additional OPEX for premise-based contact center solutions, VCC wins hands down.

The Virtual Contact Centre model is also capable of harnessing the power of a Virtual Workforce for Direct Response, Sales and Marketing, Customer Service as well as IT and Operations projects.

Campaigns are managed using logical groupings of agents, said Tan. We are able to unify and mobilise pools of agents from different geographical regions to serve a campaign which requires deep and diverse skill sets or language requirements.

Interaction handling, monitoring and quality assurance is managed via various forecasting and campaign management

tools and technologies, he added.

The unified virtual contact centre also has the potential to grow business models within its current concept.

Every business is an interaction centre. Telcos value propositions propogate downwards across existing subscriber base, from corporate, outsourcing companies to SMEs and individual subcribers. The virtual contact centre allows telcos to give birth to secondary business models and utilise them as profit centres, Tan explained.

An example is telcos offering SMEs and individual subcribers new products or services via creative bundling of internet contact centre solutions, bandwidth and mobility offerings (3G, 4G, WiMAX), he added.

To date, Superceed has established points of presence in four MSC Cybercentres namely SunTech, Cyberjaya, Mid Valley and Menara MSC Cyberport. The company is in the midst of expanding its
