70,000 General Motors employees go on strike

Monday, September 24, 2007

73,000 United Auto Workers (UAW) union members launched a nationwide strike today against General Motors (GM), the largest auto manufacturer in the United States.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said GM would need to meet pay, health care, and job security issues. Gettelfinge said, “This is nothing we wanted…No one benefits in a strike. But there comes a point where someone can push you off a cliff. That’s what happened here.”

The strike was officially launched at 11 a.m. EDT (UTC-4) today.

Negotiations were reportedly going to occur again this afternoon, but there have been no reports of any negotiating going on from either side.

80 facilities in 30 different states closed today because of the strike.

CNN reports that GM facilities in Mexico and Canada may close soon, too.

The vice president of global vehicle forecasts for CSM Worldwide, Michael Robinet, said today that dealerships in the US likely won’t feel the effects of the strike for several weeks.

A statement from GM today said, “We are disappointed in the UAW’s decision to call a national strike. The bargaining involved complex, difficult issues that affect the job security of our U.S. work force, and the long-term viability of the company. We are fully committed to working with the UAW to develop solutions together to address the competitive challenges facing General Motors. We will continue focusing our efforts on reaching an agreement as soon as possible.”

If the strike continues, UAW strike funds will supply each striker with US$200 a month and medical coverage.

More than 100,000 protest against workplace reforms across Australia

More than 100,000 protest against workplace reforms across Australia

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

Across Australia more than 100,000 people have rallied to protest against the federal government’s controversial Workchoices workplace reforms. According to estimates by police, the largest rally was held in Melbourne where more than 80,000 people were thought to be in attendance. The earlier protest in Sydney attracted some 30,000 protesters.

Smaller protests were held in other cities throughout the country.

At most rallies, members of the opposition and union leaders addressed the crowd, criticising the Howard government’s changes. Under the Workchoices system, centralised wage fixing was abolished and meal breaks, holidays and working hours became negotiable. Businesses with less than 100 employees were also given increased powers to dismiss workers. Unions and the opposition claim that the system will reduce worker’s rights and wages.

Australian federal opposition leader, Kim Beazley attended the Melbourne rally where he addressed the crowd. He said those who attended the rallies were patriots who were standing up to defend the Australian lifestyle. “This is a battle for ordinary Australian life,” he said

“This is a battle for Australian families. It’s also a battle for basic dignity in the workplace.

“You are the people that made this nation what it is.

“You are the builders of this nation. You are the true Australian patriots.”

Mr Beazley again promised that a government under his leadership would abolish the reforms.

“When we get into office in 18 months time, we will rip up these laws,” he said.

“Then we are going to put in place laws based on true Australian values.”

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), which represents a large number of employers in Australia said the total number of protesters across Australia was less than 150, 000 and labelled the protests as a day of “inaction”, despite unions calling for a “day of action”.

Peter Hendy, chief executive of the ACCI said the turnout figure is less than 10 per cent of the membership of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, which encouraged workers to participate in a “national day of action” to “protect rights at work”

Mr Hendy said only 2 percent of Australian workers participated in the protests.

South Australia Unions secretary, Janet Giles said the protests showed the dislike ordinary workers have for the laws.

“What today’s demonstrated is that the momentum of this campaign is not waning, that union members, workers, community members are out today again to say we’re still determined to campaign against these laws,” she said.

Former ‘Top Model’ contestant Whitney Cunningham defends plus size models, celebrates the “regular woman”">
Former ‘Top Model’ contestant Whitney Cunningham defends plus size models, celebrates the “regular woman”

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

Once you get a chance to talk to West Palm Beach, Florida native Whitney Cunningham, who placed seventh on the eighth cycle of the popular reality TV series America’s Next Top Model, you begin to understand what host Tyra Banks meant when she described her as the “full package.”

First of all, she is confident and headstrong, which is a must on these kinds of shows, almost as much as it is to take a beautiful modelesque picture. Second, she turns that confidence into drive. She has been receiving steady work as a model since leaving the show, and still believes that her goal of being the first woman to wear a size ten dress on the cover of Vogue is in reach. Third, and probably most important to television viewers, she obliterates the age-old model stereotype that to be pretty and photograph well, one must also be vapid and without a thought. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Cunningham also dreams of becoming a writer, and is working toward dual goals: a model who can express herself like no other model before her.

Cunningham recently sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in an impassioned interview, taking hours to field questions from the reporter as well as from fans of America’s Next Top Model. Always in high spirits, Cunningham shows that she is a distinct personality who has carved her own niche in the Top Model history books. At the same time, she exhibits a joie de vivre that is oddly reminiscent of earlier Top Model fan favorite Toccara Jones, who showed America just how to be “big, black, beautiful and loving it.” However, Cunningham is quick to remind everyone that she isn’t big at all; she is simply a regular woman.

This is the first in a series of interviews with America’s Next Top Model contestants. Interviews will be published sporadically.

Zidane apologises for headbutt">
Zidane apologises for headbutt

Wednesday, July 12, 2006

Zinedine Zidane has apologised on French TV for his actions on the World Cup final, Wednesday – but the apology did not extend to his victim. Zidane had headbutted Italian player Marco Materazzi and was sent off after 110 minutes play.

But on French television Zidane showed remorse for his behaviour. “I want to ask for forgiveness from all the children who watched,” he said.

It was expected that Zidane would reveal what provoked him into the headbutt. However, Zidane refused to divulge what Materazzi actually said but did say that Materazzi made remarks which were “very personal” and specifically concerned his mother and sister.

Materazzi had earlier admitted that he insulted Zidane, but denied any remarks on Zidane’s mother or having made a racial slur.

“I didn’t insult his mother. I lost my mother when I was 15 years old and still get emotional when I talk about it.”

“Zidane is my hero and I have always admired him a lot,” said Materazzi.

While the French star’s comments contradicted Materazzi’s view Zidane also refused to apologise to Materazzi for his on-field assault. “I want to apologise to them [the children] but I can’t regret what I did because it would mean that he [Materazzi] was right to say what he said”.

The partial apology comes as FIFA President Sept Blatter said Zidane may be stripped of his Golden Ball award for the tournament’s best player. FIFA set up a disciplinary committee to investigate Zidane’s violent conduct.

After the red card to Zidane, Italy went on to win the final on penalty kicks.

Mari DowlingWhen your concrete block production using hand molds is no longer sufficient you will want a machine to manufacture the blocks. There are a number of commercially made machines available. They do a good job but are quite pricey. Buy one if you can afford it and it will pay for itself with increased productivity. Building your own machine is the cheaper way to go.

Before the Phaeton, Tammy was showing a 1923 T Bucket at her local shows and through cruise-ins. It took a friend to step in and advise her as to what she would have to do to be able to compete with the “big boys”. “So I decided to up the ante,” Tammy smiled. She not only upped it with money, she threw in some gold nuggets just to ensure she would have quite an original ride.

When it is time to change the oil and oil filter in your car, the first thing you should do is make sure that you buy the right type of oil. Your owner’s manual should say what type of oil is right, although you can ask the person at the rockautoparts to look it up if you need to. Also, make sure that you have a container for the old oil to drain into.

When you’re indulging in a spa treatment at home you want to be able to see in the mirror as you apply your masks and various yummy body treatments. And don’t discount the power of a mirror if you and your man get up to some delectable spa massage and other… interactions. If you have a clear shower door like mine, you’ll want to keep it from steaming over so you can easily view (and join, if desired) any soaping-up action in there.

If you have already set your eyes on a used car, the most important thing that you need to do would be to have and take a look at the vehicle’s car history records. Ask the dealer or the party selling the car for these records. Do not buy a vehicle that has already been flooded for it would only prove to be useless to you. If it has already been in a serious accident, set your eyes on another vehicle instead. There are a lot of used cars being offered in the market so do not hesitate to look for another one.

A corollary to the “Every Man is a Jock” rule is that “Every Man is an Outdoorsman.” Maybe his idea of camping is driving a 40-foot RV into a campsite and plugging in, but he’ll still appreciate a gift he can use in the great outdoors.

I am not sure what kind of ashes these are. They’re very fine. I would think fireplace ashes but I’ve found pieces of branches too large for the fireplace. It appears something was burned here, right where the metal is placed, underneath the trees.

Through online and extensive collaborative network, you can also get any junk autos

, car parts, truck parts, and pickup parts. This site also provides you some high-grade and in-demand body parts, which contain auto lights, car lights, truck lights and headlights, automotive lighting, taillights. You can get all auto body you need which include discount rockauto parts as well as wholesale rockauto parts.

Some air filters are not cheap on late model vehicles. You can pay $15 or more for the part at a discount murfreesboro junkyard store. However, the mark up by auto shops can be over 100%. They may offer a discount or even free installation, but the filter alone yields them a nice profit for a job that frequently lasts less than five minutes. Changing an air filter often does not even require tools. You spin a wing nut or loosen a clip, remove a cover, and there is the filter waiting to be lifted out. Pull it out, put in the new one, replace the clip or nut, and you are on your way. It can save you many dollars quickly.

Used parts are a great option for the BMW owner. There are good parts available that were salvaged from wrecked cars. These parts are undamaged, still work, and are much cheaper than buying new. You should also ask at your local salvage yard; they may have just what you want.

Founder and CEO of Rockmount Ranchwear Jack Weil dies at age 107">
Founder and CEO of Rockmount Ranchwear Jack Weil dies at age 107

Friday, August 15, 2008

Jack A. Weil, founder and CEO of Rockmount Ranch Wear died on August 13 at the age of 107 in Denver, Colorado. He was the oldest working CEO in the United States. He was also known as “Papa Jack”.

He was born on March 28, 1901 in Evansville, Indiana. In 1946, Weil rented a space at 1626 Wazee Street in Denver and set about trying to create a fashionable yet practical identity for the western ranchers of the region.

I never wanted to be the richest man in the cemetery

Weil was well-known for coining the phrase “The West is not a place, it is a state of mind.” He was the first person to put snaps on Western shirts, patented the saw-tooth pocket design seen on many Western shirts, and was credited with inventing the bolo tie.

In 2001, he told Associated Press, “I learned fast you can’t sell to cowboys; they have no money. You have to appeal to the cowboy in everyone and sell to them.”

Among his customers were Ronald Reagan, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and Nicholas Cage. More recently, Rockmount shirts were worn by the late Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in the 2005 Academy Award-nominated movie, Brokeback Mountain.

Weil’s wife, Beatrice Baum, died in 1990, followed by his son Jack B. in January 2008.

“I never wanted to be the richest man in the cemetery,” he told his grandson and current president of the family business.

Study says to clean your sponge, microwave it">
Study says to clean your sponge, microwave it

Thursday, January 25, 2007

Studies done on germs and bacteria performed by researchers at the University of Florida show that a dirty kitchen sponge can be cleaned and “sterilized” by microwaving it for 2 minutes, but researchers warn to wet the sponge first.

“People often put their sponges and scrubbers in the dishwasher, but if they really want to decontaminate them and not just clean them, they should use the microwave,” said the professor who was in charge of the study that discovered the results, Gabriel Bitton.

“Basically what we find is that we could knock out most bacteria in two minutes. The microwave is a very powerful and an inexpensive tool for sterilization,” added Bitton.

The sponges that researchers studied, were placed in “raw wastewater” and then put into a microwave to be “zapped,” according to Bitton. The wastewater was a “witch’s brew of fecal bacteria, viruses, protozoan parasites and bacterial spores, including Bacillus cereus spores,” said Bitton.

Researchers say that at least 99% of the bacteria, viruses, spores and parasites in kitchen spongees can be destroyed or “inactivated” by simply microwaving the wet sponge, on the highest power, for two minutes.
